BRIDGET

“Seriously, what is wrong with me?”

After fleeing the teacher’s restroom, I grabbed my purse and ran out of the building. The pile of glitter we’d left behind will still be there in the morning.

I made a complete fool of myself in front of Aiden. I mean Mr. McAllister. It’s probably better if I think of him that way. As the father of Zoey. Not as the man who has my panties in a twist and drenched.

Dry humping one of my students’ fathers was beyond stupid. If we’d been caught, there’s no way the school would renew my contract. In fact, I probably would’ve been fired on the spot. When word got around, there’s no way another school in the district would hire me. Heck, I bet I’d be hard-pressed to find another job in Harris or Montgomery County. Maybe even the state of Texas.

Beyond the fact that I completely humiliated myself with him, I also could have jeopardized my career.

Unlocking my car door manually—because the stupid keyless entry battery is out—I collapse in the seat and bury my head against the steering wheel.

“So stupid,” I mumble against it.

Thank goodness it’s already March. The school year will be over in May. I’ll never have to see Aiden—Mr. McAllister—again. And he’ll never have to know that I was about two seconds away from coming with my back against the door while we dry-humped.

“I’m ridiculous.”

Pulling myself together, at least a little, I sit up straight and turn the ignition.

Click. Click. Click.

“You have got to be kidding me.”

Hoping it was a one-time fluke, I try again.

Click. Click.

“Well, shoot.” Even though we’re out of earshot of any kids, I curb my language. “Of course, my car picks today to die.”

A truck pulls up beside me.

Oh, thank goodness. Someone is here to help. I open my door a crack as the other driver rolls down his window.

“My car won’t turn on,” I call out. “I think it’s my st—” The words die on my lips and I suck in a breath. “Mr. McAllister.”

“Aiden,” he reminds me. “Grab your things. I’ll give you a ride home.”

“But, I have to fix my car.”

“Most shops are long closed by now,” he said. “I’ll call a buddy of mine to come and take care of it tomorrow.”

What he’s saying makes sense. I’d have to find a ride home anyhow. And this saves me the cost of a Lyft.

Of course, it also means being in close quarters with a man who makes every one of my senses sore. A man who makes me want to let my guard down. A man who makes me behave recklessly.

But I can’t stay here all night.

Sighing, I grab my purse and get out of the car. Aiden leans over and opens the passenger door for me.

“Thanks,” I say once I’m buckled in.

“No problem. Where to?”

I give him my address. “It’s near—”

“I know where it is.” He flashes me a grin, and my heart skips a beat. “I’m the engineer at the firehouse. I operate—drive—the truck. I know how to get just about everywhere.
